Dear mountain friends:
We are very pleased to inform you that
our club is organizing a truly unique and, to the best of our knowledge,
unprecedented mountain event: a foot-ball (soccer) game at 6,542
m (21,463 ft) above sea level! This initiative was born
from the fact that in 2002 we all celebrate the International Year of
Mountains, and this year our Club celebrates its 62nd anniversary.
The game will be played at noon on July 7th
of this year atop mount Sajama, the highest geographical point in our
country. Although foot-ball is not a sport many of we mountaineers are
particularly fond of, it is our country$B!G(Bs most popular sport. The
added factor is that, in order to play the game, we must first reach the
mountain$B!G(Bs summit after a long and extenuating climb, using
all the techniques we are normally familiar with.
The event has caught already so much attention
that our own country$B!G(Bs Vice President, an active mountaineer himself,
will honor us with his participation -and hopefully play with us!
Mt. Sajama (see picture below) is located
in the heart of Sajama National Park, one of Bolivia$B!G(Bs several
protected areas. Unfortunately, our laws have forced us to restrict the
number of participants to a minimum. It is for this reason that we have
not extended an open invitation to you all.
To the best of our knowledge, this foot-ball
game will be the highest played ever; therefore, we have contacted Guinness
World Records, asking them to register it as such.
We apologize for our Web site's being in
Spanish. We are now in the process of translating it into English.
With best regards,
Mario Miranda,
General Secretary
CLUB ANDINO BOLIVIANO /
BOLIVIAN FEDERATION OF SKI &
MOUNTAINEERING
P.S. We would appreciate your forwarding
this news to your members and friends.
